Private RuneScape servers — usually called RSPS (RuneScape Private Server) — are one of the oldest private-server scenes still alive. New servers launch monthly; most are dead within three. This guide is how to spot the ones with staying power.
For the live list, see RuneScape private servers.
The eras you’ll be choosing from
Pre-EoC (317 / 474 / 508 / 525)
The classic combat era before the 2012 Evolution of Combat. Most players agree this is “real” RuneScape. Sub-eras matter:
- 317 / 474 — the nostalgia era, 2007-style content with PvP and Wilderness.
- 508 / 525 — Summoning, dungeoneering era. More content, more bots historically.
OSRS-like
Servers that emulate Old School RuneScape (2007 + post-2013 updates). Closer to the official Jagex experience. Often run modern grand-exchange systems.
Custom
Bosses, items, and zones that never existed in real RuneScape. Lean toward “spawn server” (everything is free) or heavy custom eco. Not for purists.
EoC / RS3
Rare among private servers. Most are inactive shells.
Economy types — pick this honestly
This is the second-biggest reason people quit in week one. Be deliberate:
- Eco (economy) — drops are scarce, grand exchange has prices, gear matters. Best for players who like progression.
- Semi-eco — donator perks tilt the economy. Quitting risk: medium.
- Spawn (a.k.a. PK / pure PvP) — you get max gear immediately, fights only. No grind, no progression.
- Custom eco — server-specific items run the economy. Fun until the server resets or shuts down.
What to check before you commit
- Source base. Most servers are forks of Matrix, Apollo, Hyperion, Ruse, RuneSource, etc. The base doesn’t determine quality but does affect bug profile. Reputable bases + active developers > shiny new server with one coder.
- Uptime track record. Look for a Discord pinned message with launch date. Under six months old = treat as experimental.
- Anti-bot stance. Does the owner ban bots, or look the other way because it inflates player count? Bot-tolerant servers gut their own eco.
- Wipe history. Has the server wiped in panic before? Once is forgivable; twice means the owner doesn’t know how to back up.
- Staff named and reachable. Anonymous staff = anonymous accountability.
Common questions
Is playing on a private RuneScape server legal?
Private RuneScape servers operate without Jagex’s permission and rely on emulated game code. Jagex has issued DMCA takedowns in the past but does not pursue players, only operators. Risk is to the server owner, not the player.
Will my OSRS account work on a private server?
No. Each private server has its own database. You make a new account on each.
Do I need to download the original RuneScape client?
No. Private servers ship their own client (usually a small JAR file or a launcher). Run on a clean profile and read what the launcher does before granting permissions.
What’s the safest way to download a private server client?
Only from the server’s official Discord or website linked from their ListMyServer entry. Avoid YouTube re-uploads and random forum links.
Why are some private servers paid?
Most RSPS accept donations for cosmetics, double-XP, or perks. Heavy pay-to-win is common in this scene; that’s why economy choice matters so much.
